A few possible AI Biased that might Possibly Impacted Society
Recently, there has been a growing concern about the potential bias Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems can produce and the possible impact in our society. This is highlighted by instances where AI has displayed biased behavior. Take the case of a young Asian lady from MIT who tried an image creation AI in an attempt to improve her headshot. It happened that the AI made her look like a white lady. It even gave her blue eyes instead of just enhancing what she already had. This raises many questions about how AI systems can be biases in some areas, and the implications regarding those potential biases.
Bias of AI in Image Manipulation
As we can see in the incident with this young lady from MIT there might be potential biases in AI image creation systems. When she asked the AI to improve her headshot, the criteria it used to help her to get a better appearance perpetuated stereotypes. It made her white, erasing her Asian identity.
Now, this raises concerns about the underlying algorithms and data used by the AI. It seems to be biased with predominantly white and Caucasian standard of beauty. The young lady may have been amused by the outcome, but someone else could have been insulted. To say the least, this event calls to heads-up for a potential need for more inclusive AI systems.
As a live experience, the author of the YouTube video here above submitted a photo of himself to see what would come out of that same AI used by the young Asian lady from the MIT. The result left him a bit perplex. The AI added a beard to the author’s photo, and he never had a beard before according to his saying. On the other hand, he considered that the beard it makes him look better, so he’s suggesting that the AI might have considered it as an improvement for him.
While in his case the somewhat biased outcome may be less harmful, it still raises questions about the possible underlying biases which might be present in AI systems. Now, if biases exist, we have here a few a good examples of how they can influence the changes made to individuals’ appearances.
Content Creation with AI
Using AI to create content goes much beyond image manipulation. For example, YouTube has started using AI to generate text summaries from videos. This feature is still in testing, so it’s limited to only a certain amount of users at this time and presently only available for English videos. On the other hand, it demonstrates how big-tech companies are embracing AI to improve their products.
For the moment, the generated summaries may not always be of the highest quality, as the author of the video suggests. So, it is highly recommended to check on the quality of the writing. So, make sure to always read the output generated by AI, to verify the accuracy of the facts’ it provides in its writings. A good approach is to provide a transcript of the video to the AI, and ask it to write a summary based on that transcript. It’s a good way to leveraging the actual video transcript generated by YouTube.
AI “Hallucinations” in generated content, a challenge.
They are also called AI-generated hallucinations, and they represent a significant challenge in various sectors. These so-called “hallucinations” occur when AI produces content that may sound valid but is actually false or totally out of context. The video author reminds of some instances in touchy areas such as psychotherapy and legal briefs where the impact of AI’s hallucinations could potentially be harmful. Hence, the importance to always verify facts in AI generated content.
For example, you might have heard of this lawyer who used AI to create a legal brief that referenced nonexistent cases. Can you imagine how this might have lead to potential not desired repercussions in court? This case highlights the importance to always keep human oversight and engagement in fact-checking when using AI-generated content.
While AI can help overcome writer’s block and assist in generating initial drafts, it still requires human intervention to ensure that quality, accuracy and ethical standards are met.
Rising Controversies Surrounding AI-generated Artwork
There starting to rise controversies surrounding AI-generated artwork. We’re looking at another area where the impact of AI start to raise many concerns, in the creativity and the arts field. In a recent case, an author relied on a publisher to create the cover image for their book, only to find out that it was entirely generated by AI. This revelation led to accusations against the author, claiming that by embracing AI-generated art, they were undermining creativity and the work of human artists. This ongoing dispute underscores the ethical and philosophical questions raised by AI’s involvement in creative fields.
The Future of AI and Society
As AI continues to advance and become more integrated into our lives, it is crucial to address the biases and limitations associated with it. While AI can be a powerful tool in content creation and image manipulation, human oversight and critical evaluation are essential to ensure fair and unbiased outcomes. The current revolution in AI does not render humans obsolete; on the contrary, humans play a vital role in refining and improving AI systems. By collaborating with AI, humans can shape a future where technology serves society in a more equitable and inclusive manner.
The incidents and controversies surrounding AI bias and its impact on society raise important questions about the future of technology and its role in shaping our world. The biases exhibited by AI systems, whether in image manipulation or content creation, necessitate careful evaluation and improvement. As AI becomes more prevalent, it is crucial to strike a balance between harnessing its potential and ensuring ethical and fair outcomes. By acknowledging the limitations and biases of AI, we can work towards a future where technology benefits us all.
