Ishan Sharma from Google spoke at the KubeCon CloudNativeCon NA 2023 Conference about the use of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) in gaming applications on Kubernetes.

GenAI has become mainstream with the launch of ChatGPT and Bard, and AI and ML technologies have been steadily improving over the last decade. GenAI offers support for online gaming applications, and it is being used in game development use cases and new game experiences such as smart non-player characters, level generation, image enhancement, scenarios, and stories. Sharma discussed the pain points for GenAI in games, including platform, AI maturity, and gameplay, and how Kubernetes can solve IT operations problems for games.

Sharma also discussed different options for integrating GenAI inference with game servers, including turnkey solutions, DIY solutions with Kubernetes, and running GenAI inference servers as sidecar components within the same pod. Sharma highlighted the advantages of using Kubernetes for GenAI in games, including portability, flexibility, scalability, performance, and cost efficiency.

The presentation ended with a demo of integrated GenAI into a multiplayer game with real-time image generation. For more information on KubeCon NA 2023, the conference website and the complete program schedule, as well as the Data and AI/ML specific session catalog, can be checked out.
